Birgit Kronshage is a freelance director. She grew up in Hannover, Germany, and studied Roman Languages and Literature, Musicology and Modern German Literature at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn.

She began her career at the Stadttheater Gießen as dramaturge for music theatre (opera, operetta, musical) and concert, where after she became assistant director at the Theatre in Kiel. As resident director (Spielleiterin) at the Stadttheater Bremerhaven, she directed Fra Diavolo (Auber), L'elisir d'amore (Donizetti), Two Widows and The Bartered Bride (Smetana).

From 2002-2010 she was the resident director at Theater Bielefeld. She directed various operas during this time and some of the most exciting projects included Der König Kandaules (Zemlinsky), La Bohème (Puccini) and Combatimento di Tancedi e Clorinda (Monteverdi).

As director of the Studio Theatre at Theater Bielefeld, she directed a wide variety of works from different epochs and contrasting styles, e.g. the monodrama Through Roses (Neikrug), the melodrama The manner of love and death of Cornet Christoph Rilke (Ullmann) and the children's opera The Emperor's new clothes (Wilden).

Her recent productions include The Gypsy Baron (J.Strauß) at the Landestheater Coburg and Ball im Savoy (Abraham) at the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater.

Birgit Kronshage has written scripts, interpretations and adaptations for a diverse range of projects including Orpheus oder Umdrehen zwecklos (a Monteverdi-Pasticcio), a chamber version of the operetta Gasparone (Millöcker) and a staged Liederabend Battles/Aunts/Cruelties (G.Kreisler/Schumann/Wedekind).

As a book reviewer for Shortbooks (GoNamics Gmbh), she was responsible for the online descriptions of books published.

As a presentation trainer she works not only with professional artists, but also with people from other occupations and backgrounds to develop their confidence in public speaking and self-presentation. She regularly appears as a moderator of concerts, exhibitions and other events.

Birgit works closely with the Music Conservatory in Detmold as a lecturer of "scenic instruction and interpretation".
